Stories by age

Bedtime stories for ages 5-7

Stories with a plot, dialogue and a calm ending, read aloud in three or four minutes.

From around 5, a child wants a story that goes somewhere: a character, a problem, a moment where everything turns. They guess what happens next and recognise what the hero feels when scared or left out.

These stories deal with things that happen at this age, like a new school or a new baby at home, and always wind down calmly. If the dark is what makes bedtime hard, the guide to night fears helps sort what reassures from what keeps the fear going.
