Lunii vs Yoto: which one for bedtime stories

Lunii suits you if you want an object with no display, stories your child puts together, and audiobooks bought one at a time. Yoto suits you if you prefer cards, a large English-language catalog and an optional Yoto Club membership. The differences below come from the two brands' US and UK pages, and a third approach closes the page.

How each device works

Lunii is a French storyteller, sold in the US as My Fabulous Storyteller. The child builds a story by choosing a hero, a place, a companion and an object, and the device plays it.

Yoto is a card player. Each card holds audio, and the 4th Gen players store more than 1,000 hours offline. Yoto lists the Yoto app and a Wi-Fi connection among the requirements. Both 4th Gen players also have a Green Button with day and night playlists of up to 20 titles, so a child can start something without a card.

Price: the device, then the content

My Fabulous Storyteller is $79.90 on Lunii's US site. Audiobooks are sold separately, for example $8.99, $12.99 or $17.99 depending on the title. The US product page doesn't mention a subscription. The UK page we opened showed French content priced in euros, so UK parents should check delivery first.

The Yoto Mini 4th Gen is $109.99 in the US and £89.99 in the UK. The Yoto Player 4th Gen is $149.99 and £119.99. Cards are bought one by one (a Disney Pixar bedtime collection is $7.99 in the US). Yoto Club starts at $4.99 a month in the US and £3.99 a month in the UK, with more than 300 titles included and a two-week free trial.

Display, age and battery

Lunii sells its storyteller for ages 3 to 8 and presents it as a way to keep quiet time free of screens. The US product page we read doesn't give a battery life.

Yoto says its players suit children aged 3 and up, and that younger children can listen with an adult handling the device. The Player 4th Gen has a display for artwork and a clock, and a night light. Both 4th Gen players advertise up to 16 hours of battery life.

Who tells the story

With both brands, the child hears a recording, and it sounds the same every time. Yoto credits readers on its cards: the Pixar bedtime card says "Read by Disney". Yoto also lets you record your own voice onto a Make Your Own card, which comes in the box.

Lunii's catalog is its own stories plus partner titles such as Mr. Men Little Miss. On Lunii the child shapes the story by picking its elements. On Yoto the child picks the card.

How to decide

If you want an object with no display and stories your child assembles, Lunii does that, and the device costs less.

If you want more English-language content, a Green Button for favorites and the option of a membership, go with Yoto.

A third approach: reading it yourself

With Lunii or Yoto, you are not the one telling the story. With Lulio you are: it is a bedtime story subscription whose text is written to be read aloud by a parent, in 5, 10 or 15 minutes. Each evening brings a new episode of a saga starring your child as the hero, where siblings, pets and comfort toys can play a part.

Lulio has limits compared with a box: your child can't use it alone, and there is no audio narration. The first episode is free, no credit card needed, then €12.99 a month with VAT included, billed in euros, no commitment, for children aged 2 to 10.
